10/08/2011 Scripture

Praise the Lord.  Praise, O servants of the Lord. Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. From the rising sun  to the place to where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.  The  Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens.

-Psalms:113-1-4NIV

The bible says that the true worshippers of God will worship God in spirit and in truth…(john 4:23-24)

So i was wondering, how does one worship God in spirit?

What a great question! Let’s jump right in. In the passage that you refer to, Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman who has been shunned by her community. She is kinda cynical and seems like maybe she’s been burned by religion. In the preceding verses she questions Jesus saying that her ancestors believe they have to worship on a mountain “but you Jews” (v.19) believe that Jerusalem is the right place for worship. Jesus responds to this in verses 21-24. assuring her that neither place is the “right” or “only” place.

So, I started thinking and remembered Matthew 15:8-9. “‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'”

God is not interested in the religious traditions that men cling to so tightly. He is not interested in the lip service we pay Him. He looks at the heart. So, as we see so many times in the Gospels, Jesus is saying don’t just bring Me religious tradition, just bring your self. It does not matter if we worship in a church or in our living room; in Jerusalem or Jersey. True worship comes from within us;giving what is in our souls to the One who gave all for us.
