Remedy for Fear

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God…I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.

The Embrace of Wilderness

So rests the sky against the earth. The dark still tarn in the lap of the forest. As a husband embraces his wife’s body in faithful tenderness, so the bare ground and trees are embraced by this still, high, light of the morning.

I feel an ache of longing to share in this embrace, to be united and absorbed. A longing like carnal desire, but directed towards earth, water, sky, and returned by the whispers of the trees, the fragrance of the soil, the caresses of the wind, the embrace of water and light. Content? No, no, no — but refreshed, rested — while waiting.

— Dag Hammarskjold (Swedish diplomat and second secretary-general of the United Nations, winner of the 1961 Nobel Peace Prize)

02/17/2012 Scripture

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.

-1 Corinthians 10:23-23 NLT

In the Midst of Beauty

In the midst of such beauty, pierced with its rays, one’s body is all one tingling palate. Who wouldn’t be a mountaineer! Up here all the world’s prizes seem nothing.

02/16/2012 Scripture

And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.

-Hebrews 1:2-3 NLT

The Eternity of Wilderness

The wilderness that has come to us from the eternity of the past we have the boldness to project into the eternity of the future.

Idea of Wilderness

The wilderness and the idea of wilderness is one of the permanent homes of the human spirit.

02/14/2012 Scripture

Prophecy and speaking in unknown languagesand special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless.  Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

-1 Corinthians 13:8-10 & 13
